Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion(GIEC), Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), was founded in 1978, which of the predecessor was known as Guangdong Geothermal Energy Research Lab. In April 1998, the former Guangdong Satellite Observation Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences was affiliated. In the same year, the institute was ***ermined as the base institute of high technology R&D by CAS.
¡¡¡¡In the research field of clean energy engineering, GIEC¡¯s strategy is to R&D new and renewable energy utilization technology, to find a solution to environmental pollution and energy conservation associated with conventional energy use, and to develop energy regeneration technology for environmental pollution abatement process. Presently, the institute is subdivided into 8 research groups: solar, clean energy, biomass, solid wastes, industrial energy conservation, geothermal energy & heat pump, water & air treatment, and heat chilling. One chief scientist heads one group. -Now a relativly stable and energetic group of researchers and a contingent of administrative personnel, principally consisting of young scientists, have been formed. The institute has become an active force in the line of China's energy research and development.
¡¡¡¡Great importance is attached to international co-operation and academic exchange, thus good relationship has been established with other countries or areas, such as Japan, the United States, European Community, Egypt, Hong Kong, Taiwan etc. Since its foundation, the institute has gained more than 100 items of research accomplishment. Among them, about 80 were granted prizes of provincial or ministerial level, more than 100 were granted national patents. Many of the accomplishments have been transferred into production force, yielding appreciable economic and social benefits.
